Wow, what a kick off! The Luna City Express really
lived up to its name. “Fresh” (MHR019), the Moon
Harbour label debut of the two fellows from Berlin,
almost took off like a rocket. It instantly climbed up
to rank 6 at the Top 50 charts of the German Groove
magazine’s July/ August issue. “WHITE RUSSIAN” is
the EP’s title track on the A-side. Its omnipresent 1/8
bass impulses leave no doubt that this track has
nothing to do with dozy cocktail cosiness. And from
this one certain point after two or three minutes,
when the Detroit-like pulsating chords complement
the groove with a tremendous implicitness and
advance the track with its irresistible flow, everybody
will confirm that, played at the right time, “WHITE
RUSSIAN” can be explosive. The B-side tracks “CITY
SLICKERS” and “HIGHER” come up a little more
dignified. They build on classic cartoon-like vocal
samples and grant more space to the individual
sounds without losing track of the specific basic
groove of the EP.
