Known internationally for their cross-pollinations of pop and techno, Detroit’s Matthew Dear and Berlin’s Ellen Allien share a place at the fore of the underground; having toured North America together in 2005, the two agreed to transpose their dynamic to vinyl. Dear emphasizes the strongest elements of his Audion guise on “Just a Man,” while Allien serves up a fine slice of noir electro with “Just a Woman.” Between the two original pieces, each artist reworks the other. As a common space for two of techno's most creative minds, “Just a Man/Woman” is an unprecedented battle of the sexes where each side makes an iron-clad case. Let's call it a truce.
